Bingo Life Interview with Martin Burlin, EAG Chairman

In January 2020, the Entertainment, Attractions and Gaming International Expo (EAG) celebrated its 10th anniversary as a successful must-attend event at the very heart of the amusements and entertainment industry, attracting participants from around the globe.

Wind forward just a few months and with the global Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc with lives and businesses, bacta, the show’s owner, has been focused on seeking alternative ways of supporting the industry in a safe and effective way. Early in November, it was announced that EAG will take place from 27th-28 January 2021, but as an online event.

Bingo Life caught up with EAG Chairman Martin Burlin for a chat about the show’s new format and what it will mean for its participants:

How did 2019 treat Willow Communications ?

2019 was a fantastic year for Willow Communications across all areas of our business; retail bingo, casino, AGC, hospitality and leisure. The granting in 2019 of our Gambling Commission licences to provide facilities for the playing of bingo was a catalyst to further develop our established and proven BiGD platform (Bingo Information Graphical Display), which is now used by most UK multi-site retail bingo operators. 2020 promises to be a very busy year with exciting new bingo and jackpot games being launched with several of our retail bingo clients. Our Bingo and Jackpot manager software is deployed on our BiGD platform to provide paper based games presented on the in-venue public display screens to deliver dynamic rich media game content.

GamCare’s Safer Gambling Standard: One Year On

GamCare is the leading provider of information, advice and support for those affected by gambling related harms across Great Britain. Alongside operating the National Gambling Helpline, open 24-hours a day and offering a range of support and treatment services nationwide, they also use their expertise to provide training and accreditation for the gambling industry, including through the Safer Gambling Standard.

The Safer Gambling Standard was launched a year ago and working alongside the BSI, (British Standards Institution,) GamCare has ensured that the Standard is a recognised mark for gambling operators licensed in Great Britain: to date five gambling businesses have already completed and achieved the accreditation, with more en-route. Currently 20 operators are actively working with GamCare on achieving accreditation.

The hard work and generosity has brought the total raised to date to over £1.3 million – a staggering amount of money!

 103 clubs and a £40 million investment

A number of towns and bingo players across the country have felt, and seen, the winds of change blow through, as Gala Bingo rebranded to Buzz Bingo, establishing itself as the newest and largest licensed bingo club operator in Great Britain.

The transformation is now almost complete and Buzz Bingo has launched all 103 clubs across the country following a staggering investment of £40 million, with the remaining 19 clubs due to be completed by February 2019: players are seeing the changes and experiencing the benefits. Cherry Hosking, Company Secretary of The Bingo Association, won Compliance Officer of The Year at the Gambling Compliance Global Regulatory Awards, held at The Sheraton Grand, Park Lane, London on Wednesday 18th April.

The Award acknowledges an outstanding compliance professional that always goes beyond the call of duty and has embraced the compliance function within their organisation, implementing it effectively with enthusiasm and vigour. Judges were looking for an exemplary individual who pro-actively embraces the compliance function, and who reacts to regulatory developments positively in their role. The Judges found that person in Cherry.
